Mecetam (Piracetam)
COMPOSITION
Each capsule contains piracetam 400 mg.
THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS
- Consequences of ischemic stroke (mental and
physical disturbances, speech disorders, loss of activity, emotional disorders);
- Symptomatic therapy of psychoorganic syndrome (including in elderly patients,
suffering from reduction of memory, attention, total activity, speech disorder,
mood changes, behavioral disorder, vertigo, headaches; chronic alcoholism);
- Comatose and subcomatose states following brain traumas and intoxication, and
also in rehabilitation (to increase motor and psychic activity of patients);
- Nerve system diseases associated with reduction of intellectual amnestic
functions and emotional and volitional disorders;
- As an additive agent in treatment of epilepsy, depressive diseases, resistant
to antidepressants, in case of intolerance of neuroleptics and other
psychotropic agents;
- Abstinent, pre- and delirious states in alcoholism and narcomania;
- Consequences of perinatal brain injuries in infants, caused by antenatal
infection, birth trauma; oligophrenia; mental retardation; infantile cerebral
paralysis;
- Cortical myoclonia;
- In complex treatment of sicklemia.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
- Hypersensitivity to piracetam or other drug
compounds;
- Hemorrhagic stroke;
- Severe renal impairment (creatinin clearance < 20 ml/min);
- Pregnancy and lactation.
- Infancy under 3.
ADVERSE EFFECTS
Effects from CNS: rarely possible irritability,
anxiety, restlessness, sleep disturbances, headache, vertigo, weakness, and
somnolence.
Effects from digestive system: in rare cases - nausea, vomiting, abdominal
pains, diarrhea.
Effects from metabolism: very seldom - body weight increase (1.29%).
Dermatological reactions: itching, skin rash, urticaria, edema.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
For oral administration.
For adults:
Chronic states: the initial daily dose 1.2 g divided into three intakes, then
2.4 g, and sometimes 3.2 g a day. The therapeutical effect occurs as a rule in
2-3 weeks from therapy initiation. Further the dose is decreased up to 1.2-1.6 g
a day divided into 3-4 intakes.
Consequences of ischemic stroke: 4.8 g daily.
Prolong therapy of psychoorganic syndrome in elderly patients: 4.8 g daily for
several weeks, then 1.2-2.4 g daily.
Chronic alcoholism: 12 g daily in the period of manifestation of abstinence
syndrome, maintaining dose is 2.4 g.
Cortical myoclonia: initial dose 7.2 g daily, increase up to 4.8 g every 3-4
days up to 24 g daily.
Sicklemia: 160 mg/kg a day divided into 4 intakes.
For children:
3-7 years: 400 mg a day, the average therapeutical dose is 800 mg, maximum is 1
g.
7-12 years: 400 mg; 0.8-1.2 g; 1.2-2 g daily according to the age.
12-16 years: 800 mg, 1.2-2 g, 2.4 g daily according to the age.
PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
Mecetam is contraindicated during pregnancy and
lactation.
MANUFACTURED FORM
Hard gelatin capsules 400 mg for oral
administration. 10 capsules are in AL/PVC stripes. 6 stripes with a leaflet are in a carton box.
